Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse Specialist promotes quality patient care across the continuum. Implements teaching/learning theories and principles to foster educational development of patients, families, and staff. Will provide healthcare consultation using leadership, communication and change theories. Identifies and implements research methods to support quality care, patient safety and evidenced based practice. Provides support in financial and growth opportunities. Maintains and advances knowledge and skills in area of specialization. Leads patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
Implements and role models best practice in delivery of quality patient care across the continuum.
a) Assesses, plans, and evaluates patient care needs through communication and collaboration with various health team members.
b) Uses assessment, research and theory to design and implement nursing interventions that integrate with medical treatments to provide highest quality individual and population based care.
c) Serves in a multidisciplinary role in designing and implementing alternative strategies for patient care.
d) Utilizes the informatics process to assure quality and safe patient care.
e) Provides leadership in clinical care delivery to front line staff.
Implements teaching/learning theories and principles to foster educational development of patients, families, and staff.
a) Independently identifies disease process and health maintenance educational needs of patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
b) Plans and coordinates education of individuals or groups of patients, families, staff and/or communities.
c) Develops and presents educational programs and conferences.
d) Precepts students and peers.
e) Serves as adjunct faculty.
Provides health care consultation using communication and change theories.
a) Collaborates with the interdisciplinary health care team in planning individual and population based interventions.
b) Partners with the medical staff and other disciplines on consultation of patients, improvement initiatives and evidenced based practice.
c) Works to develop and/or improve nursing informatics and technology to make system wide changes and enhance communication.
d) Assess, develops and implements policies and procedures which are related to area of specialization.
e) Provides information and expertise in area of specialization.
f) Consults with health care institutions and community agencies to meet the needs of specific individuals and patient populations.
g) Serves as a resource within the health care system for complex patient issues.
Identifies and implements research methods to support quality care, patient safety and evidence based practice.
a) Utilizes pertinent research developments, information and theories in field of specialization to achieve quality, cost-effective outcomes.
b) Synthesizes and interprets statistics using critical thinking for application to the clinical setting.
c) Evaluates the impact of programs and interventions on clinical outcomes and clinical practice.
d) Promotes research and collaborates with interdisciplinary team on research.
Provides support in financial and growth opportunities.

Leads patient safety and quality improvement initiatives at the unit, service line and organizational level.

e) Leads multidisciplinary quality improvement teams for resolution of quality issue.
f) Acts as change agent for patient safety initiatives.
g) Responsible for producing outcomes at the unit service line and organization level.
Minimum Position Requirements
BSN and Masters Degree in Nursing required. North Carolina RN licensure required. 5+ years experience as a Staff Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager needed.
